Laura Yates

My story

Laura YatesI discovered Nia in 2004 when I went to the gym to attend my regular yoga class. Kathy Wolstenholme (who introduced South Africa to Nia back in March 2002) was holding a promotional Nia Class in place of Yoga.
I was hooked form the moment the music started playing… the rhythmic sounds beats started moving from the floor, through my feet, intoxicating my muscles and bones – I felt alive!
Having danced during most of my years at school, I felt like I had come back home… sensing my body moving, getting lost in the music. I found it so meditative, yet also exhilarating.
For the next 3 years I continued indulging in the joy of movement as a student, going to as many classes as possible and becoming so appreciative of the beautiful people that Nia was bringing together as a community.
I then moved to the UK for my Career, but continued to follow my passion for Nia.
I completed my White Belt in April 2006 with Helen Terry in a magical studio owned by Jill Raine, in a gorgeous English Village called Tattenhall, in Cheshire.
I started teaching in Tattenhall and the subsequently moved to the London, and taught classes at Virgin Active and other spaces, with fellow teachers. Getting to know a new Nia community, who were so warming and welcoming was part of this wonderful Journey.
In 2009, after getting married to my best friend and love of my life, Steve, we moved back home to SA.
Once again I was swept up in the wonderful support of the Nia community in Johannesburg; my friend and Nia colleague, Brenda Loukes offered me her classes in Bryanpark, and I have been teaching there for the past year.
In April 2010 I was privileged to go to Portland, Oregan, USA, where I completed my Blue Belt Training with the 2 founders of Nia – Debbie Rosas-Stewart and Carlos Aya-Rosas.
To experience Nia at it’s heart, was an experience that I will always hold dear.
And now, I get to fulfill my dream – to have my own Nia studio – a sanctuary for students and teachers – a sacred space for everyone to experience The Joy of Movement.
